Mindfulness in 2 Minutes
Mindfulness has become something of a buzzword in pop psychology in recent times. However, the techniques and the wisdom behind them are in fact thousands of years old.
Why is Mindfulness Important?
When we get stressed, our heart rate jumps as a result of the adrenaline surge, our cognitive functions then shut down and we run on animal instinct, unable to think clearly…
“Your mind is like the water my friend when it is agitated, it is impossible to see. Allow it to settle, and the answer becomes clear”
Mindfulness allows the mind to settle and the solutions to become clear.
How does Mindfulness work?
As with many things, the answer is a paradox, the opposite of what seems logical, is in truth, the answer. When stressed, tensing and “trying” blocks our instinctual creativity. The answer is to “feel” into our bodies, ground ourselves by turning our attention to the outside world and our sensory perceptions and allow the answer to present itself.
We must get the conscious mind out of the way so that the creative unconscious mind can provide insight and inspiration - those moments of brilliance that we all have from time to time.
We cannot achieve this when the conscious mind is in overdrive and our adrenaline is surging.
Mindfulness has a similar effect to meditation but is different in that the focus is outwards on our sensory perceptions and the external world, whereas in meditation the focus is inward.
How to “do” Mindfulness
Just sit comfortably and allow all the activity of the day to just fall away……
Feel your feet on the floor…..
Feel the weight of the body on the chair…….
Feel the pressure of the clothes against the skin………
Feel the play of air upon the face…….. and the hands…………….
Feel the air you breathe as it comes in through the nose.......
Feel the air on the tip of the nose…………
Be aware of what you can smell…….
Be aware of what you can taste……….
If the eyes are open, let colour and shape be received without comment………
Be aware of what you can hear…… allow the hearing to run right out…. Embracing all……
The whole process should take around 2 – 3 minutes to complete. Practice twice a day and the benefits will manifest in just a few weeks.
