Everyone experiences anxiety at times, for example when taking a driving test, attending an interview or waiting for the results of a medical test. In normal circumstances, these fears are proportional to the actual situation and short-lived.
Many anxiety disorders are limited to one specific aspect of a person’s life, for example, their health or losing their job. While most people may have an appropriate concern over such things, those with an anxiety disorder unrealistically magnify the likelihood of a negative outcome and its potential consequences.
For some people, however, anxiety can be almost constant, they worry and feel fearful about a wide range of matters. Their daily lives are adversely affected in countless ways and they may even forget what it felt like to live without the insidious feeling that something bad is going to happen.
Negative thinking, always expecting or anticipating the worst possible outcome, may become a way of life. In such cases, the person concerned may be suffering from Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). This condition affects around 1 in 20 of the current UK population.
If you feel that this description fits with your own experience, the good news is that help is at hand. Anxiety doesn’t need to become a way of life. Effective anxiety treatments and techniques such as hypnotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy can help you deal with your fears and release you from the burden of constant worry.
Anxiety conditions are fuelled by distorted thinking, (particularly focusing on what’s the worst that could happen), dwelling on the negative and exaggerating risk. In brief, the sufferer usually confuses a probability with a possibility.
Therapy, particularly hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and counselling, can help you to avoid the thinking distortions that lead to that confusion.
To quote the great American philosopher Mark Twain: “I have worried about many thousands of things in my life… one or two of them actually happened.” 🙂
Phobias, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety are all more specific forms of anxiety.
Social Anxiety
Social anxiety – often referred to as social phobia – is a very common form of anxiety and can be mild, moderate or severe.
In mild cases, a person may simply dislike public speaking or being asked to give a presentation at a staff meeting. They might not want to be the centre of attention at a party.
In moderate cases, this may develop further to the avoidance of staff meetings, declining invitations to parties and avoiding crowded places such as pubs.
In severe cases, the sufferer may even avoid places such as supermarkets and wherever there is social interaction. This can result in the sufferer becoming very reclusive and isolated, which can lead to depression.
Because social anxiety is unfortunately so common, there are a range of successful therapy techniques and treatments which can help.
How is Anxiety treated?
Anxiety conditions respond well to a combination treatment including CBT and suggestion therapy. They also respond well in many cases to hypnoanalysis. We can discuss together which method would best suit you.
Much of our success in treating patients with anxiety ultimately comes down to education through therapy as to how one makes oneself anxious in the first place. This is almost always by employing a combination of thinking distortions such as catastrophising, mind-reading, forecasting, black and white thinking and self-blaming and/or by using their imagination in a negative way to make "scary movies" of a possible future outcome or scenario.
It is essential to remember that the future has NOT happened yet! The only place those scary movies exist currently is in your own mind! The mind, unfortunately, has the ability to imagine all sorts of horrifying scenarios, that is why some people are able to write novels like Frankenstein and scripts for horror movies, NONE of which actually ever happened.
The great Richard Bandler wisely advised, if you are going to make stuff up, make good stuff up! Doing this in practice, however, requires the development of certain skill sets over time which happily we are experts in assisting with.
