The Law of Attraction

What is “The Law of Attraction”? Is it real? Does it work?
These and other important questions will be examined in this article.
The “Law of Attraction” was made famous by the best-selling book entitled “The Secret”
Unfortunately, the contents of this book and the contributions made by a number of eminent thinkers on the subject were heavily sanitised for marketing purposes and given the success of the title, clearly quite successfully.
As a result, the terms “Law of Attraction and “The Secret” are bandied around without much real understanding, and as we all know, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing…
What is the law of attraction?
In a nutshell, the book suggests that beyond the laws of physics, the most fundamental law of the universe is the law of attraction. This basically means "like" energy attracts like energy, so if you think positively and positively visualise what you want in life, it will manifest itself. Energetically this is true, thoughts are energy, the universe is energy and our thoughts affect the whole.
The book further suggests, that we alone are in complete control of our destiny and whatever happens in our lives, including the tragedies, are down to our thinking and what we imagine….
So, for those people (and there are many of them), who already have an over-developed sense of responsibility, the law of attraction as portrayed in the book, can easily be interpreted as a reason to blame themselves for every tragedy that has happened in their lives.
Myth or Fact?
According to the book, all we need to do is “ask, believe, and receive”.
Notice, this is where the book introduces the caveat, that what you want to manifest must be visualised/imagined as if it had already happened, with total faith, in the complete absence of doubt ….. This is difficult for most of us adults, but children do this automatically.
For example, most little girls dream of one day being rescued by the fairy prince and living happily ever after in a castle… they believe and hope for this with total abandon and faith, imagining it vividly as if it had already happened…. Yet tragically some of these children end up being raped, beaten and even murdered…. Even some babies are beaten to death. Is it really being suggested they manifested this??
Even most adults have been in relationships where at the start they totally believed with complete faith and positivity in their happy ever after, yet ended up abandoned and heartbroken.
Despite these facts, “evidence” for the “truth” of the law of attraction is bandied around by the “gurus” willy-nilly. For example, this guy had a vision board with a picture of the house of his dreams on it and 20 years later ended up living in that exact same house. Or a few women who imagined the man of their dreams in great detail and ended up married to them. Perhaps such examples might be better explained by the people in question working towards their goals or in many cases by the term, simple coincidence.
I am not aware of any of the gurus who have won the national lottery yet and Arielle Ford by her own admission is still trying…
If we were to accept the letter of the book and the simple principle of ask, believe, receive, then undoubtedly the Lord Jesus must surely have been one of the best ever at using the law of attraction. So are we saying he manifested his own crucifixion? Sadly he certainly didn’t manifest his way out of it.
Did 6 million Jews (including the babies and children) manifest their own murders??
Is it Real?
The Law of Attraction and “control of our own destiny” is NOT an exact science, not least because everyone else on the planet (and quite likely every living thing in the universe) is manifesting too, and their energy fields’ impact upon ours.
Furthermore, given that the whole is invariably greater than the sum of the parts if you get a large group of people together focussed on a violent or sinister aim their energy field can affect all of us for example the Nazi party in the 1930s.
So to suggest that we alone are in complete control of our destiny and all we need do is ask, believe and receive is frankly, in my opinion, asinine!
Only Michael Beckwith (one of the main contributors to The Secret) points this out, but mainly in his own books and publications. He fervently believes in The Law of Attraction but points out that it is far more complex than the book, “The Secret”, would indicate.
As Dr Michael correctly intimates, we are CO-creators! Fate, destiny (are they different?) the universe, God, the great oneness, the universal unconscious, whatever you may call it, is 50% responsible for what happens in our lives, but we do have some influence over the remaining 50%.
Therefore, in conclusion, I am NOT saying positive visualisation or more importantly, positive mental attitude is a bad thing, it does, in fact, give us the best chance of attaining what we desire, but this is perhaps more about the principle that “we always get more of what we focus on” rather than “The Secret” per se…
